My Street car: A Boosted 2018 GT Mustang

My first car and most notable, the Subaru was and still is my favorite car to drive. But being the delicate show car it is today. I have a tendency to keep it out of harms way as much as possible. This includes not driving it on the interstate to avoid little rock chips

Surprisingly, there was a few times in my young, and dumb age where I considered selling the Subaru (before its current state) for a new body style S550 mustang. I'm super glad I never went through with that, and kept the Subaru. With that being said. I knew exactly what I was after, as I had many years to learn all about what I wanted for my next car. Finally the timing was right. I had decided I was comfortable and ready to find my 2nd car! And thats where the story really begins.

The Specifications I was looking for

2018 Mustang GT with a manual transmission finished in Royal Crimson red.

The significance of the color : Royal Crimson

Each year, Ford has a limited edition color specific to the Mustangs! In 2018, that color was Royal Crimson. To dive even deeper, Ford produced 90,056 Mustangs in 2018, only 4396 were finished in Royal Crimson. 2179 of those had the small engine I was not interested in even slightly. 2217 of those came with the infamous 5.0l V8 coyote engine, but 403 of those were convertibles... which I also would never consider. With only 1814 cars left and some being automatic transmission, it narrows it down even farther because I wanted manual and just to add to it, the Performance package too.

Looking for a car of these specifications, it's surprising I only searched for over a year. Heavily I might add, but still impressive. September 15, 2020, it was a Sunday morning while doing my daily KSL Classified scroll, I found one. Less than 40 mins old on the listing! I shook my Dad awake and we ran out the door in a matter of minutes to drive south for over an hour to see if this is the car I've been waiting for.

90,056 2018 mustangs

28,864 were 2 door fastbacks

11,463 came with the 6 speed manual

only 653 of them were painted Royal Crimson

Purchasing the Mustang

After looking over the car and going on a short test drive, I had confirmed that this was the car I had been looking for. With it being a Sunday, neither of our banks were open so, I handed him a $100 bill to show him I was serious about purchasing the car but said I was originally prepared to spend $30k. This car was posted for $34.9k, I had a decision to make.

Seeing the dilemma in my eyes, the seller took the money too hold the car and expressed it was more important to him that the car went to a good owner as opposed to profiting on the sell. He explained that he was leasing the car and just wanted out of the financial obligation. He offered that I could just buy him out for the remaining balance. This was amazing news! I asked what the remaining balance was. He agreed to gather all the information necessary.

The next day he called to inform me that the buyout price on his lease was $29,900. This was perfect as this fits the budget I was prepared for!

We setup a time to meet the next day again down south. We met at a branch I bank with to sit down and sign papers. My bank had contacted the leasing company and requested the necessary paperwork needed to buyout the mustang from them.

After waiting what felt like an eternity we finally got the paperwork. But there was a HUGE problem. Right at the top of the paperwork it stated that the vehicle could not be purchased by a 3rd party and must be purchased by the current leasee or a dealership. Meaning I could not purchase this car.

My heart was crushed. After scrambling for options, we concluded nothing. The seller decided to keep the car after finding out how difficult it was going to be for him to get out of the lease early. Walking out of the bank, full of dissappointment, I had an idea....

The paperwork mentioned the vehicle could be purchased by a dealership. I called a good friend of ours that ran a dealership (John Watson) back home in Ogden, and explained the situation. He offered to purchase the vehicle from the lease company, and sell it back to me for NO PROFIT. There was hope again! But still one problem. I had to take the car to the dealership in Ogden, but it wasn't mine yet. I got so lucky because the seller trusted me enough to take his car to Ogden without him so I could finalize the sale! Everything was again working perfectly! But it gets better. After getting to our friends dealership in Ogden to sign papers, we learned that because a dealership was purchasing the vehicle, the leasing company sells it to them for a cheaper price! Even more perfect, the dealership helping me let me purchase it for THEIR PRICE! I was extatic!
